HOSPICE MISSION STATEMENT

Hospice of North Ottawa Community's professional team provides compassionate physical, emotional, social, spiritual and bereavement care to enhance the final months of life.

Our goals are:

  • To preserve dignity and provide comfort for patients and their families
  • To extend into the community through end-of-life education and bereavement support

We are located at 18525 Woodland Ridge Drive, Spring Lake. Regular office hours are M-F 8-5. An on-call nurse is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

What is Hospice?
Hospice is a professionally trained team of nurses, social workers, pastor and home health aides providing comfort care to the terminally ill wherever the patient calls home: private residence, nursing home, assisted living facility, adult foster care home or hospital.

Who is the Hospice team?

  • Medical Director joins with the patient's primary care physician to provide a pain and symptom-free plan of care.
  • Nurses specifically trained in symptom management and pain control for patients with limited life expectancy.
  • Social Workers will assist the patient and family with end-of-life tasks, counseling, financial issues and coordination of community resources.
  • Spiritual Coordinator provides non-denominational spiritual support and counseling according to the patient's and family's wishes.
  • Home Health Aides provide practical care such as bathing and assistance with the activities of daily living.
  • Bereavement Counselors provide the bereaved with emotional and grief support for 13 months after the death of the patient, and longer if needed.
  • Volunteers specially trained to offer companionship, support and respite services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use Hospice for end-of-life care?
In our death-defying, death-denying society, we have lost the ability to cope with the concept of dying. Families can benefit from discovering there are options when facing stressful issues such as uncontrollable pain, fear of the unknown and feelings of isolation. 90% of Americans prefer to die comfortably in their own home with loved ones nearby. Hospice helps the patients and families accomplish that goal by living every precious day when every day is precious.

How Can Hospice Help Me?
Hospice care is a covered benefit under Medicare, Medicaid and most insurances. Your Hospice benefit will include payment for:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications relating to the terminal illness
  • Home medical equipment (beds, oxygen, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.)
  • Laboratory and x-ray services
  • Therapies providing comfort and pain relief including physical, occupational and speech therapy, radiation and chemotherapy, massage and music therapy.
  • Transportation (to hospital, nursing home, doctor appointments.)
  • Supplies (adult disposable briefs, bed pads, catheter and tube feeding equipment, etc.)
  • Any medical costs related to the terminal illness including inpatient respite care, hospitalization for pain management/symptom control, etc.
  • Pain consultation with attending physician

Donations for Hospice

Gifts, contributions and donations to Hospice are tax deductible. Individuals may wish to honor a loved one or family member by making a donation to Hospice, and donations in memory of a loved one, neighbor or friend are appreciated. Donations will directly support our ongoing programs to provide nursing care, bereavement counseling and many services that are not covered by insurance. Your Hospice donations help to fulfill our promise to never deny any patient compassionate care regardless of ability to pay.
